"Dry" System - Standard Sample Loading - Sample in Vacuum
In the midst of the current He-3 gas shortage crisis, JanisULT is very proud to announce the development of the next generation cryogen-free He-3 cryostat system, with substantially enhanced operating efficiency.
JanisULT has improved on its cryogen-free helium-3 cryostat design with its second generation model HE-3-SSV-PT-2 cryostat for cooling samples in vacuum. It utilizes the additional cooling power from the regenerator to pre-cool the He-3 gas before it is liquefied. The condensing efficiency is substantially enhanced with this novel design, resulting in a longer holding time.
The JanisULT new model HE-3-SSV-PT-2 He-3 system offers 100 hours of continuous operation at temperatures 310mK. This represents a 100% increase in operating time, while using the same amount of He-3 gas as the previous generation system.
Alternatively, 50 hours of continuous operation can be achieved while using only 50% as much He-3 compared with previous models. Conserving limited He-3 resources makes good sense, and also significantly reduces the cost of the system.
The system includes highly conductive flexible thermal links made from multiple strands of OFHC copper fine wires, to connect the two stages of the cooler to two OFHC copper flanges. These are in turn used to cool to two radiation shields and bi-polar heat switch that control the He-3 condensation, cool down and temperature control. This design intercepts the vibrations of the cryo-cooler and significantly reduces the vibrations that may be transmitted to the He-3 stage and any detectors or samples attached to that stage.
The system is supplied with a complete set of thermometers and heaters to monitor and control the temperature of the various stages of the cryostat. It also includes all the necessary valves and pressure gauges for safe reliable system operation.
The model HE-3-SSV-PT-2 system includes the following components:
- Cryostat with vacuum jacket and cold stages
- Pulse tube cryo-cooler (cold head and compressor, high pressure hoses, etc.) with distributed cooling stage
- Charcoal sorption pump
- He-3 condenser
- He-3 pot
- He-3 gas
- Heaters and thermometers
- Heat switch
- LabVIEW program for operation
- Operation test
- Resistive and/or superconducting wires
- Coaxial cables
- Fiber optics
- Clear shots
- Rotating sample holder
- Low eddy current cold finger
- Automatic temperature controller
- Turbo pumping station

In 2002, JanisULT delivered the first model HE-3-SSV-CCR cryogen-free He-3 system (which reached a base temperature of ~300mK with measured holding time of 50 hours). Since then, there has been a steady increase in interest in cryogen-free low temperature systems. We then announced the second generation of this system, the JanisULT model HE-3-SSV-CCR2 cryogen-free He-3 system. And most recently, we are pleased to announce the model HE-3-SSV-PT-2, with a 100% increase in operating time, while using the same amount of He-3 gas as the previous generation system.
